For Coaches

Granola vs Fathom for coaches: notes or a call record?

A complete recording and a useful coaching note are not the same thing. Choose what you need to keep, what your client agrees to and how you will review it before comparing AI summaries.

Switchboards editorial · Sources checked

Based on current documentation, not a hands-on benchmark. Recommendations are editorial; practice examples are fictional.

What do you actually need after the session?

“Bot-free versus a meeting bot” is no longer a reliable dividing line. Fathom now advertises bot-free options too. Choose the capture mode and review workflow you need.

Granola

A useful first evaluation if you want to jot your own notes and have AI expand them using the conversation transcript.

Fathom

A useful first evaluation if you want to choose between transcript-only capture, audio capture or a full video record.

Decide what you should keep

Write down the minimum useful record: what the client chose to work on, what was agreed and the next check-in. A verbatim transcript may contain far more than that.

No bot in the participant list does not mean no data is processed. Explain the capture method to the client, obtain the permission appropriate to your agreement and check the vendor’s current data controls.

The follow-up should reflect an agreement

A summary can turn a tentative idea into a commitment. Before sending, compare every action, owner and date with your own notes. Keep private coach reflections out of a client-facing recap.

If a client does not want a captured session, use your permitted manual notes to prepare the follow-up instead. You do not need to record every conversation to benefit from AI assistance.

Evaluate one session before changing your process

Use a fictional practice conversation rather than a live client as your first test. Include an interruption, a changed date and an idea that is explicitly rejected. These reveal more than a clean demonstration.

Check the exact device and meeting setup you use. Capture modes, limits and integrations can depend on the account or platform. The linked vendor pages describe features, not a guarantee that every setup behaves identically.

A small test before you commit

An idea is not a commitment

Fictional practice material

Fictional session: the client considers contacting ten prospects, then decides that is too much. They agree to draft one message by Friday and review it at the next session. They do not agree to send it yet.

Use the same prompt

Create a short client recap from this practice session. Separate ideas discussed from commitments agreed. Include an owner and date only if stated. Do not turn a suggestion into homework. End with the next check-in, or say it was not specified.

Check the result

Run the same fictional practice conversation through the available capture modes. Check consent controls, the commitments captured and what you can delete or keep. Do not judge the tool by summary length.

Before you choose

Is Granola the only bot-free option?

No. Fathom’s current overview advertises bot-free transcript-only and audio capture. Check the mode available on your device and account.

Can I use either without telling the client?

Do not treat a bot-free interface as consent. Explain your processing and follow the permissions and agreements that apply to your practice.

Do I need a recording to write a follow-up?

No. If you have suitable notes and permission to process them, you can draft a recap without capturing the whole session.
