Chat answers. Cowork does the job.
In a chat, you ask, it answers, and you copy the answer somewhere.
In Cowork, the somewhere is part of the task. It opens the files, does the work and saves the result where you said.
Here’s a real Cowork prompt from my free starter kit. It runs on a sample business folder:
“Work in this selected folder. Read BRAIN.md and business.json. Inspect dashboard.html.
First explain the three most useful findings in this sample.
Then create weekly-review.md and needs-you.md. […]
Put only decisions requiring my judgment into needs-you.md.
Do not contact clients or cancel anything.”
The last line matters as much as the first. Cowork takes real actions on real files. Tell it what it may not touch.
Is Claude Cowork the same as Claude Code?
Same engine, different room. Claude Code was built for working inside software projects, usually from a terminal.
Cowork brings that way of working to documents, spreadsheets and everyday apps, with no terminal.
Anthropic’s own course introduces it as “Claude Code for the rest of your work”.
My own system runs on Claude Code, because parts of it live on a server and run while my laptop is closed. If you’re starting out, Cowork is the friendlier door.
Does Claude Cowork still exist?
Yes, but the separate name is fading.
Anthropic now presents Cowork as part of Claude: you ask for what you need, and Claude decides whether it’s a quick answer or a longer task.
If a tutorial tells you to click a Cowork tab you can’t find, ask in a normal conversation in the desktop app and give it a folder to work in.
What do you need to use Claude Cowork?
A paid Claude plan. Use the desktop app when the work involves files on your computer, because that’s where Claude can open and save them directly.
Connecting Gmail, Slack or a calendar is optional and can wait.
How it shows up in my work
My whole business lives in one folder on my Mac. It’s literally called Claude Cowork.
Each project has a STATE.md file with what’s decided, what’s open and what’s next, so no session starts from zero.
Some of my mornings run through the Claude desktop app too.
At 7:35 a scheduled task reads my inboxes and writes draft replies. It never sends. I decide what goes out.
When I built my AI workshop for coaches, the first ten minutes were setup.
One folder in Documents, a subfolder per offer, connected to Cowork so every output lands in the right place.
The line I wanted everyone to keep: your file system is your memory.
When it’s worth it
When the job has several steps, touches files and ends in something you’d otherwise build by hand.
A weekly review, a cleaned-up spreadsheet, a first draft of a deck.
It’s overkill for a quick question. Before you trust it with anything overnight, check what happens when your computer sleeps.
The seven jobs I actually hand over, each with a prompt and what broke, are in Claude Cowork use cases for business.
Cowork is one kind of AI agent. The apps it reaches come through connectors, many of them built on MCP.
The free personal AI assistant guide is built for Cowork. It comes with a sample business folder, so you can watch Claude work before you give it your own files.
