Building with AI

The shift is not from doing work to typing prompts. It is from holding every step yourself to designing a system that can understand the context, use the tools, and bring the right decisions back to you.

Building with AI means combining model capability with your business context, tools, rules, interfaces, and feedback so a real workflow can move end to end.

Prompts produce outputs. Systems carry work.

A prompt can draft a post. A content system researches the market, asks the creator useful questions, turns natural speech into formats, sends the risky work for approval, publishes the safe work, and learns from performance.

A prompt can summarize a spreadsheet. An operating system can notice what changed, combine it with messages and deadlines, and send one morning brief that explains what needs the founder now.

The five parts of a useful AI system

  1. Context: the goals, people, projects, language, preferences, constraints, and examples that make the work yours.
  2. Connections: access to the files, calendars, forms, communication tools, and business systems where work already lives.
  3. Rules: what good means, what cannot happen, and where a person must approve.
  4. Interface: the dashboard, text, conversation, or small tool that makes the system understandable.
  5. Feedback: the edits, failures, results, and decisions that improve the next run.
The practical starting point

Do not try to “AI-enable the company.” Choose one repeated burden with a visible outcome. Build that complete lane. Let the real work reveal which context, connection, rule, and interface the system needs next.

The hard part is often knowing what to build.

People usually arrive with a tool in mind because tools are easy to name. The real need may be oversight, relief, consistency, demand validation, or a decision they keep avoiding. Start there. The technology becomes much easier to choose once the desired change is specific.
